Amazon

I've finally got round to joining amazon's Associates programme. Unless I've made a complete hash of things then anytime you click through to via the little Amazon button on the right I should receive a commission on anything you purchase. Clearly this is the way to do your Christmas shopping... Also, a friend said that I should really have an Amazon "Wish List" of stuff I've been meaning to purchase but, er, haven't. So here it is. I mean it would be embarrassing, but kind of wonderful, if anyone paid any attention to this sort of thing. However, shopping at amazon via this site costs you nothing more than what you'd be paying if you just went straight to Amazon...

Huh. You're in luck, a few hours ago I was charged with ordering some stuff for my little brother from Amazon for Christmas. Will try to remember to click the link.

Incidentally, if you haven't read them already, suggest you try the "Gervase Fen" series of murder mystery novels by Edmund Crispin, three of which have (The Moving Toyshop, Hold Disorders and Love Lies Bleeding) have fairly recently come back into print. Seems to me they are broadly compatible with your love of Wodehouse.

The Ambassadors The President of the United States often really seems to be a kind of elected Priest-Monarch. One area in which this is obviously apparent, is his ability to reward cronies and fundraisers with agreeable Ambassadorships overseas. Matt Yglesias, who is too wise to buy the wisdom himself, offers the official justificatory fig-leaf for this patronage: I had always just thought of this is a kind of casual, widely accepted corruption. But recently I did learn the official story as to why this is good practice, namely that an important political supporter or a friend of the president is likely to have a much easier time of getting access to the Oval Office than any mere foreign service officer would. Thus, it’s arguably better for the host country to have a political appointee than a career FSO. Therefore, this practice helps build good-will and so forth. Up to a point Lord Copper! It's true, for instance, that Jean Kennedy-Smith, appointed Ambassador to Ireland by Bill Clinton, found it easier to get a line to Tony Lake and the White House arguing that State should support an entry visa to the US for Gerry Adams in 1994, whereas Raymond Seitz, the first...

Obama and Europe, Cont. Dan Drezner politely suggests I'm talking (or writing, rather) through my hat in this gloomy assessment of the transformational potential of the Obama presidency. Dan prefers to see the potential rather than the pitfalls. And he may be correct. It would probably be better for all if he were. As it happens, I do think he's right to argue that many european policy elites - and certainly much of the think tank world - do believe that Afghanistan must and can be saved. And it is certainly possible that withdrawing form Iraq (if that proves possible) could create the space and manpower needed to refocus on the "Good War". Nonetheless, I suspect european public opinion has soured on or, to be more generous, is simply confused by a conflict that drags on with little sign of progress, let alone an endgame. Now it's certainly possible that Obama can leverage his popularity and the idea of a fresh start and lead by example in Afghanistan. Jim Jones' experience with NATO and Europe Command should help - though of course Jones will be familiar with the limits of what NATO can realistically achieve, as well as its potential.
