Now Mr Matthews promises us the expert analysis of Congressman Peter King. Well, if any member of Congress is qualified to talk about blowing up London it is Mr King. After all, he spent thirty years supporting and justifying the Irish Republican Army's efforts to murder British citizens.
As he told an IRA rally in 1982, "We must pledge ourselves to support those brave men and women who this very moment are carrying forth the struggle against British imperialism in the streets of Belfast and Derry." Two years later Mr King's "legitimate guerilla army" came close to assassinating Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. Subsequently there were bombs in the City and Docklands, plus a mortar assault on 10 Downing Street amongst many, many other outrages.
In a case of better late than never, the New York Congressman says he split with the IRA in 2005. For more on his apologies for terrorism see this informative Ed Maloney article.
Matthews is well aware of that, I am sure, given his own ethnic heritage and long and close association with Irish-American politicians. I doubt he will mention it, however.
