I am reluctant to buy the Irish Nationalist line on Ulster as one of the four Historic Provinces. That'll be Leinster, Connacht, Munster, Ulster and Meath, then? I gather that historically Ulster waxed and waned so that at different times it embraced all or part of more than half of the present day counties. In fact, the acceptance of the counties, and the acceptance that exactly nine of them constitute Ulster, seems to me to to "privilege" the Tudor settlement, which is an odd thing for a Nationalist to do. Still, I suppose it all forms part of the race-hatred towards the English that constitutes so much Irish popular historiography.
