Alex: have been preoccupied chasing birds with the dogs -- and have been remiss in checking in. But how very nice to see a wee smidgeon of Hugh MacDiarmid -- and a few cogent thoughts as well.

How was 'Black Watch'?

To be honest, this sort of thing doesn't endear America to Britons such as myself. What business is it of yours to go around the place idly wishing to abolish and reorganise my country, and all in the name of some selfish, faint, remote and vague pinings? I support the Iraq and Afstan engagements to the hilt, but I begin to believe there is something to this notion of clumsy American imperialism, and I do not like it one bit.

America and Americans have no business stirring up more problems in the UK. You did enough of that with Ireland. And before that, with India, and all the rest of it, after the war. Fuck off. The end.

Answering CP: in both World Wars, the British Empire spent a great deal of money and effort to get the Great Republic to enter the Wars on OUR side.

And nowadays, Southern Death Rows are infested with Clive Stafford-Smith types trying to persuade Americans not to kill their most loathsome criminals.

So, we interfere(d) in their politics, they interfere in ours. Deal.

I'd forgotten how much of a diddy Andrew O'Hagan is. Confederates never felt "betrayed" by Lincoln - they knew him for what he was, an open enemy, avowed for years, whnich is why they bombarded Sumter as soon as he was elected.

Keith

Confederacy uniquely accommodates pro-Independence and pro-Union preferences. Perhaps thats why we hear so little of it from on high...yet.

re the Scottish heritage in the USA, I was surprised to see no mention of Texas, despite the Scots origin of city names like Houston, Austin, and Dallas. On the TV show "Dallas", the Ewing family - Scots again - was headed by "Jock"!
