"It makes no more sense for the state to tell you where your kids may be educated at high school than it does for the state to tell you what university you may attend."

Well, sure, but as Matt said, the state isn't forbidding poor kids from going to private school, it's just not paying for them to do so - which is basically the same case for university - the government doesn't give vouchers for university either (some loans and grants, sure, but not vouchers per se - and public universities are still cheaper to attend for in-state residents than private ones due to state subsidy).
