I don't think one needs to endorse the status quo anywhere to be opposed to the idea of vouchers. I think the idea of school "choice" is extremely pernicious because it allows that some schools should be worse than others. With a standardised national curriculum this should not be the case. Concentrate on making all schools *good* and effective at what they do instead of looking to bureaucracy for its own sake, rent-seeking and clericalism for answers. They don't have any.

But what was the Adam Smith Institute's definition of success? Just because something's politically successful doesn't mean it's going to improve outcomes, or increase social mobility.

I imagine you're going to tell me to go away and read the paper, aren't you?

Thank you for bringing attention to my report. Reforming the UK school system along the lines of the Swedish reform would give children - especially those from low-income families - more educational options, enhance competition between schools and, consequently, improve educational standards.
